Necromunda is a gritty grimdark setting, so I wanted to go extra heavy on a rusted effect for a floor vent. The problem with some other techniques was the large surface, and pushing the contrast between light and dark hard enough when the terrain is flat on tabletop.
Spending some time learning drybrush techniques from Artis Opus videos is well worth the time (e.g. stippling, smooshing even using water! So I embarked armed with regular acrylic paints, the great Artis Opus drybrushes and accessories.
It was actually a pretty quick process, and ran so smoothly I forgot take photos of the progress! You might find this a recurring theme on my posts as I tend to enjoy the process and get lost in it.
I leant heavily on the stippling technique, and built up a textured layer through the colours from dark brown to orange. I used AK, ProAcryl and GW Air (!) because that reflects my seemingly random paint collection, not because of any special reason :)
I painted the blue housing to match some other Necromunda terrain I had been working on, which does include some enamels for pin washes and rust streaks.
But you can check out those techniques on this other blog post.
